The Welcome Desk provides information and support to the PhD students to help their entry in France with visa procedures if required. They provide information on how their arrival will occur, for their comfort and anticipation. They help them fulfil obligations regarding the French administration, internal administrative procedures and present work regulations and rights, and assist them on many practical aspects (bank account, transport card, health, accommodation, insurances), inform about PSL facilities and services and facilitate their integration (e.g. French language courses). The PRISM students will benefit from physical meetings, individual face-to-faces, and outings (events presented on the Welcome Desk website). The PSL Welcome Desk is composed of polyglot employees all with extensive international experience, who are dedicated to helping students and researchers settle down in Paris and adjust to the French every-day life and culture.
The goal of PRISM is to hire the best possible researchers for the PhD positions regardless of sex, age, ethnicity, country of origin, religion, sexuality, disabilities, etc. PSL will strictly implement the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers promoting open recruitment and attractive working conditions. As being the only way to guarantee scientific excellence, ensuring equal opportunities will be a continuous imperative for PSL.
All PhD supervisors are either full-time researchers or faculty members holding permanent employment in one of PSL’s Joint Reasearch Units.
PSL’s objective in term of supervision is based on proximity. The university has a high supervision rate with usually 2 PhD students per supervisor, generally strengthened with the presence of a co-supervision. The complementarity of the supervisors can also be scientific if the PhD project requires it. For PhD co-funded by business partners, an industrial referent is appointed and actively participates to the follow-up meetings of the PhD student with other supervisor(s), they are part of the PhD committee as well. A bilateral agreement is signed with the industrial partner prior the beginning of the PhD.
All PSL PhD supervisors are offered management training to acquire mentoring skills. This existing course of PhD supervision is mandatory for the PRISM supervisors before the start of the theses. Moreover, during the programme, supervisors can seek advice from the required experts. PSL’s Doctoral College is a dedicated office for PhD students. It coordinates and implements PSL’s doctoral policy. It brings together the 29 doctoral schools accredited or co-accredited by PSL. It contributes to the exchange of experience, the dissemination of good practices and the promotion of doctoral students at PSL.
Supervisors are instrumental in helping the students to identify and address their research development needs. They integrate the PhD students into research group activities, including seminar series and staff meetings. They also coordinate teaching and supervision activities for the students, as determined within CDPs. Weekly meetings are organised with the supervisor to discuss on the advancement of the PhD project. The co-supervisors provide additional guidance and facilitate the insertion of students during their mobilities. Joint online meetings are organized at least every month for coordination between the two co-supervisors.
For secondment, a scientific referent is appointed at the hosting partner institution. Complementing the secondment agreement, meeting before, during and after the secondment are organised with the PhD student and his PhD supervisor.
For secondment outside EU, in addition to the secondment bilateral agreement, the scientific referent of the hosting partner organisation needs to sign a declaration of compliance with EU and national legislation and that equivalent ethics standard.
